9:30-10:00 am Welcome, Announcements

10:00 am-12:00 pm Barbara Nickless: “Nail Your Research: A Writer’s Guide to Disasters, Drug Dens and Other Surprising Sources”

Writers love research. It’s how we build our story’s foundation and get to know our characters and setting. Best of all, if we’re busy researching, we don’t have to face that blank page. Right? Um, no. Writing and research go hand in hand. But how do we start, where do we look, and how do we know when we’re done? Topics covered include how to:

  • Build a solid research foundation
  • Organize and incorporate your research
  • Track down sources
  • Discover hidden treasures
  • Keep up your word count while researching

We’ll also talk about how some famous authors conducted their research and why research never really ends (and why that’s okay).

12:00-1:00 pm Lunch (brown bag or visit nearby restaurants)

1:00-3:00 pm Jennifer Kincheloe: “Behind Bars: What it’s Like to be an Inmate, Deputy, or Research Scientist in the Denver County Jails”

What is the process from booking to release? What is the difference between prison and jail? What is it really like in jail? What is the culture? What are the rules? Plus, interesting anecdotes collected from deputies about inmates and the crimes they’ve committed.

3:00-4:00 pm Board Meeting (all are welcome, location to be announced at the meeting)

Please feel free to come to either the morning or afternoon session if you cannot attend both.

Barbara has always been interested in things that might get her killed, or at least maimed. She’s rehabilitated wild birds of prey, explored little-known caves, handled rattlesnakes, and raised two children through their teenage years. Her bestselling Sydney Parnell series is how she imagines life would be for Harry Bosch—if he were a railroad cop with a price on his head. Find out more at www.barbaranickless.com.
