9:30-10:00 am  Welcome, Announcements

10:00 am-12:00 pm Literary Salon

Sisters in Crime-Colorado is trying something new this year! We would like to give our members an opportunity to read a portion of their work in a supportive and encouraging environment at our first-ever Literary Salon. No critiques, no negative feedback–just a reading from a work-in-progress or a publication. This will be a wonderful occasion to share what each of us is working on. Please bring up to 750 words to read; depending on how many people want to read that morning, you will be reading for 3-5 minutes. Priority will given to dues-paying Sisters in Crime-Colorado members. We hope you will join us–and we look forward to learning more about you and your stories! To sign up as a reader, please email kuhnc@msudenver.edu by February 3.

1:00-3:00 pm Catherine Spader, RN: “The Nuts and Bolts of Blood and Guts for Writers”

How long will you live after a psycho cuts off your arm with a chainsaw? What kind of damage does an iron maiden inflict on the human body? Can you survive being shot in the chest without adequate medical care? When it comes to writing blood and guts, fact can be juicier than fiction. Come get inspired, ask your most gruesome questions, and enjoy some chilling tales and gallows humor from history and today’s ER. There will be plenty of time for questions about scenes you are writing that involve injuries or diseases. (Note: this presentation and images presented may be disturbing for sensitive attendees.)

About the Presenter:

Catherine Spader, RN, is a nurse who specialized in ER and trauma care for twenty years in Illinois and Colorado. She is also the award-winning, best-selling author of the historical fantasy series, The Wulfhedinn Series. She is an editor, writing coach, and journalist who has published over 1,000 articles, many in medical journals. And yes, she writes a lot of blood and guts into her fiction.
